So as anyone who follows me on Twitter will be COMPLETELY unsurprised to hear, I absolutely freaking love Idina Menzel. And listening to her Friday Night Is Music Night again coupled with a conversation with a friend made me want to write about one of her songs. So I’ll put a read more here so I don’t spam y’all’s dashboards :)

If you were paying attention to your twitter timelines on Friday 26/4 you probably saw me tweet something about being in tears hearing Idina sing I Stand. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to explain quite the deep, personal connection I feel to that song, but I want to try anyway.

So I first discovered this song not long after discovering Wicked - I’ve written before about how Defying Gravity literally changed my life - because I’d heard this VOICE in these songs and I just HAD to find out more! (Hence beginning my love affair with the work of Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel)

But when I heard I Stand, it just connected with me. It just distilled how I felt about the world and condensed it into this beautiful song, sung by this beautiful woman with an incredible voice! It was amazing.

However, to really understand why it means so much to me, you need to know a bit about my life at that time. And that’s something I’m not sure anyone who’ll actually read this will know… I discovered Wicked after hearing two of my (amazingly talented) friends sing For Good at a gig my sister was performing in with the school swing band. Needless to say, I was blown away by it and when I got home, youtubed it and discovered Wicked. But this gig was in November of 2009, which had turned out to be possibly the worst year of my life. That February my dad had a heart attack. Quite a serious one - I seem to remember someone saying that he’d been half an hour away from dying at one point. So not good. Luckily he was sorted out with a nice, straightforward operation.
Then he had his recovery, which took MONTHS before he could make the ten minute walk to the shops. That was very hard going. (Side note: he’s made a complete recovery now and is healthier than he’s been in years)

Add into that already lovely situation my third year of exams, so obviously the biggest I’d ever had (GCSE and AS levels) and that makes for a pretty tough year. But I’m not done yet.

Then you have to add in my coming out in May. Now, to say that this was less than ideal is an insult to the word “understatement” I don’t really have the time to explain it all, but I’ll say almost none of it was my choice and it was a very hard time for me. To be honest, I could add in several more things here, but I won’t to save space. Just be aware that I’ve not mentioned everything.

So for all of those being thrown in together, that year was TOUGH. So for this incredible song to come along… It meant a lot. Let alone that there was no magic wand at new year that made 2010 suddenly completely ok! Dad still needed to continue recovering, there was trouble with ill grandparents, a fair amount of battling against the casually ignorant homophobic language I heard regularly on top of more exams, more drama in school, boy trouble (on no small scale!), other stress from everything at home, the list goes on!

But I Stand was there, even more than my friends (who have always been amazing when I’ve needed them). It was always there to calm me, to ground me, to help me. I would play it and repeat it - for hours at a time if I mixed in Brave a couple of times, too. I’d cry to it, I’d sing along under my breath, I’d fall asleep to it. It became one of my most played songs and an integral part of my life, really. And it still means SO MUCH to me for that. For getting me through those times, for helping me remember to live for that perfect day, it still means as much now as it ever has.

This has been an enormous post, and I’ve rambled on for far too much considering that very few people will read this, but I wanted to try and explain somewhere why this song means SO much to me and why hearing it being sung live on national radio made me SO emotional. It’s been there by my side through many hard times and will be for many to come.

Sometimes I get super mega depressed that my favourite fandom is the least known one I belong to, and that goes double for my OTP within it. I love the musical, but I love the books more and I love Liir and Trism with this fiery passion that would probably be better spent on a productive hobby.
